Common Fridge Issues

The most common failures we see day to day are refrigerators that are not cooling properly, leaking water, not producing ice or water from the dispenser, building up frost on the back of the fridge, freezing food in the refrigerator side, making weird noises, or are keeping your food cold but not cold enough. A simple test to determine whether your refrigerator may be failing is to check the firmness of a gallon of ice cream. If it does not keep the ice cream firm, your refrigerator is not functioning properly.

Another common issue is that the gasket seal around the edges of the refrigerator door is no longer air tight. If you can close a dollar bill in the refrigerator door, and remove it easily while the door is shut it is time to replace that gasket. To prevent your gaskets from needing replacement, clean them as you would your fridge. This is something you can do your self. However, if you are not comfortable doing refrigerator repairs your self, we can have a factory trained technician out to do it for you!

What should the temperature be in my fridge or freezer?

The factory will ship the refrigerator with a mid-range temperature of 0° F for the freezer section, and 37° for the refrigerator section. The temperature outside the refrigerator can effect the temp inside of the refrigerator by about 6° up or down. Typically you can get set the freezer temp from -15° to +15°, and the fridge side from 30° to 50°. The ideal temp is going to be from 35°-38° for the fridge, and in the freezer 0° to store food and -10° to freeze it. If you change the temp it can take up to 24 hours to fully adjust, and you should wait 8 hours with the door shut before checking the temp.

How do I check the temperature in my refrigerator or freezer?

In the refrigerator section, place a cup of water with a thermometer in the fridge and wait 8 hours. Do not open the door during this period! And to check the Freezer, place the thermometer between two bags of vegetables and close the door. Wait 8 hours, and do not open the door!

What should I do if my refrigerator or freezer is not working?

If your refrigerator is not working because of a power outage, call your electric company and find out how long it will be off for. If it is less than a 24hr period, shut both doors and do not open them again until power has been restored. If the refrigerator is not cooling due to a technical issue, we can usually have you up and running again with-in a 24hr period. However, if your fridge is going to be down for more than 24 hours, remove all frozen food and place it in a food locker or ice chest along with 2lbs of dry ice for every cubic foot of freezer space. This can keep the food frozen for between 2-4 days.

How should I clean my refrigerator, and how often?

You should clean out your fridge and freezer about once a month to keep the odors out. Use a mild detergent, warm water and a soft sponge or cloth to clean the interior of the Fridge. It is recommended to occasionally unplug the unit from power, remove all shelves and compartments, and clean each component thoroughly. To remove odors, clean the walls with a mixture of warm water and baking soda (2 tablespoons baking soda to 1 quart of water). Dry everything you wash and do not use paper towels to dry, use a soft cloth.

What type of regular maintenance is required on my fridge?

Besides regular cleaning, you should clean the condensing coils on the refrigerator. The condensing coils may need to be cleaned any where from every other month to once a year. Keeping these coils clean will maintain the efficiency of the refrigerator and increase the life of the fridge.

What should I do if my refrigerator is leaking water?

First thing you should do is pull the refrigerator away from the wall and turn the water valve off. Next is to inspect your water filter, if you see signs that the water is leaking from the area of the water filter, its probably time to install a new filter. If all else fails, give us a call and one of our appliances technicians can come out and make sure your kitchen stays dry!
